FT-24: Hot, Dry Valleys and Lowland to Alpine Vegetation; Sichuan, Yunnan

This trip is an introduction to the Hengduan Mountains, one of the top 10 biodiversity hotspots in the world. The first station is the Sichuan Panzhihua Cycas National Nature Reserve and Cycas Garden. The second stop is Lugu Hu ,the third largest deep lake in China. We will spend two days at Lugu Hu. It will be an excellent introduction to the plateau wetland, alpine aquatic plants, such as This trip is an introduction to the Hengduan Mountains, one of the top 10 biodiversity hotspots in the world. The first station is the Sichuan Panzhihua Cycas National Nature Reserve and Cycas Garden. The second stop is Lugu Hu ,the third largest deep lake in China. We will spend two days at Lugu Hu. It will be an excellent introduction to the plateau wetland, alpine aquatic plants, such as Ottelia acuminata (Hydrocharitaceae) in Lugu Hu, and the alpine Quercus forest on Shizi Shan surrounding the lake. To study the aquatic plants, we will take a traditional Mosuo ethnic boat cruise. We will spend the next two days at the third station, Lijiang, to study alpine plants in the Lijiang alpine botanical garden, alpine grasslands on Yulong Snow Mountain, and visit Yufeng Temple, where 200-300 year old trees of Michelia yunnanensis, Magnolia delavayi and Camellia reticulata grow. We will visit Joseph Rock’s residence to memorialize the great botanist and experience Heilongtan Park and the ancient town of Lijiang. On the sixth day we will drive to the fourth station, Dali Shibao Shan, a Danxia landform mountain. The trip will end at Cang Shan, ranging west of the city of Dali. We will take a cable car to study the pattern of vegetation distributed along the mountain. After hiking, the last stop will be the Tianlongbabu film studio, where we will have a special presentation on the ancient city of Dali and on China. grow.
