LV-1B Orchid Conservation & Research Center of Shenzhen (FREE)

The Orchid Conservation & Research Center of Shenzhen (the National Orchid Conservation Center of China, NOCC) was founded in September, 2006. The Center is devoted to orchid conservation, development of conservation strategies and the promotion of orchid conservation in China. NOCC is responsible for the establishment and maintenance of the orchid center and its base. In addition to collecting and conserving, the Center is also tasked with orchid reproduction, rejuvenation, research, monitoring, identification and providing technical consulting on endangered species of orchids in China. The center also conducts fundamental scientific research, has an interest in biotechnology and biosecurity and the popularization of science. It is also involved in knowledge sharing, training orchid specialists, encouraging academic exchanges and collaborations and promoting public understanding of orchids.
The herbarium of NOCC has the largest collection of Chinese endangered orchids, comprising more than 921 species. Among them are all species of the endangered genus Paphiopedilum worldwide. The herbarium currently contains 4,130 orchid specimens, including 121 type specimens, 444 fossil specimens of animals and plants correlated with orchid evolution, living specimens of more than 1.2 million individuals, around 210 thousand photos and images and 7,500 DNA samples.
Important: after entering the Botanical Gardens, Congress delegates should be mindful of Botanical Gardens’ regulations. It is not permitted to collect samples of the flora on display.
