In 2011, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) decided to launch the China National GeneBank (CNGB) project. Established by BGI-Research, CNGB has become the largest genomics research facility in the world. After five years of development, CNGB has built an integrated infrastructure of ‘Three Banks and Two Platforms.’ The ‘Three Banks’ represent the Biorepository, the Bio-informatics Data Center and the Living Biobank; The ‘Two Platforms’ include the Digitalization Platform and the Synthesis & Editing Platform. The Living Biobank is committed to building China’s Noah's ark, which is intended to protect and save the life resources of almost 300 thousand species of plants, a million species of animals and over 10 million species of microbes.



AGIS is affiliated with the Chinese Agricultural Academy of Sciences (CAAS), and is a government supported scientific research institute with particular strengths in agricultural genomics, molecular breeding, crop and food metagenomes. AGIS covers an area of 146 hectares in the hinterlands of Dapeng New District in Shenzhen. It has a scientific research staff of more than 140 persons, including 12 CAAS innovation teams, 3 awardees of the National Outstanding Youth Foundation, 3 finalists from the National High-level Personnel Special Support Program, 9 national talents from Shenzhen and 1 from the Shenzhen Peacock Team. The estimated annual funding received by AGIS is about 50 million CNY.
